Derick holds a masters degree in Sports Science and Nutrition from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as an undergraduate degree in Health Promotion and Exercise Science from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
While at Appalachian State University, Derick competed as a NCAA Division I runner and earned all-conference honors. Additionally, in recognition of both his academic and athletic achievements, Derick received a distinguished NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Derick pursued triathlon and bike racing, while continuing to run competitively. His list of accomplishments as a multi-sport athlete include USAT All-American honors, a top national Xterra ranking, and a handful of belt buckles from the grueling Leadville Trail 100 MTB race. Meanwhile, Derick continues to win at the elite running level, including first place overall at the 2007 Austin Half Marathon.
